Once you have registered online an irtec member of staff will contact you, or your company, to arrange a test day at an irtec-approved assessment centre.
| | |
On your test you will be required to take the online theoretical test under the surveillance of an approved invigilator. You are given two attempts at the online theory test on that day.
| | |
If you pass the theory test, you may then take all related practical assessments covering the topic associated with your sector and level of licence. This can be done of the same day or arranged to be completed at a future date. |
| | |
Once you have passed all elements of the irtec assessment, you will be sent an irtec certificate and licence to acknowledge your achievement. Your name will be added to the irtec national register of licensed technicians until your licence expires five years from the date of your earliest assessment.

Unsuccessful candidates in the online theory test are able to re-sit this component once onlu on the day of assessment providing they have remained under exam conditions (as specified within the irtec guidance notes to irtec centres and candidates). If they prefer, candidates can choose to re-sit at a future date.
If candidates fail the online theory test, but have passed the practical tests in any sector, they are allowed an extended period of 3 months to reach the required standard in the theoretical test. If they have not passed the theoretical test after this time they are required to re-sit the full assessment. |
Candidates who wish to take a written test at a future date will be subject to an additional fee of £20, which is payable to the irtec assessment centre. |
A candidate can arrange to re-sit practical modules at the centre which they were assessed, providing the number of modules referred is less that 50% of the overall practical modules. This process may incur an additional cost. |
Candidates who fail more than 50% of the practical components are required to re-sit the entire practical examination and should contact irtec to arrange a suitable date for re-sit which will incur an additional cost. |
The technician has six months to re-sit the referred practical modules after which the candidate will be required to re-sit both practical and online theory assessments. |
| | |
Although entry requirements apply, candidates who start at level one of the irtec scheme, pending a successful outcome, are eligible to proceed to the next level (advanced) of the scheme. If all assessment criteria at this level are satisfied, they may then progress to the master level.
