Can anyone apply for an irtec licence/certificate?
Anyone who has worked in the industry as a mechanic technician for a minimum of three years is eligible to take an irtec level 1 licence and you do not need to be a member of the Society.
How long do the Level 1 Service Technician tests take?
You are advised to set aside a whole day for the testing to be carried out. The test includes four and a half hours of practical assessments and a 50 minute theory test which is completed on line. Most assessment centres offer a preparatory course that takes place the day before the actual test. This day is designed to help the candidate prepare for the test and alleviate any worries they may have about being tested.
How can I apply?
It’s simple. All candidates must first register their details before they can be booked on to a test. Click here to complete a registration form. It’s very straight forward and does not take long to complete. Once submitted, a representative of the irtec scheme will contact you shortly after with details of your test.
How much does it cost?
It costs approximately £280 to take a level 1 licence, unless you are on an accredited company programme.

* Please note: the optional pre-test training day is an independent fee and not covered by the £280.

How long does my licence last for?
Your licence and certificate are valid for 5 years from the date of testing. Shortly before your licence and certificate are due to expire, we will contact you in order to ascertain what your intentions are. Should you wish to re-new your irtec licence, you simply take the test again.
What type of licence can I apply for?
The types of licences available are listed here on the website. As well as licensing being available for the specific area of the industry that you are involved in, i.e. either heavy vehicle or light commercial vehicle, candidates can also be tested at three different levels of competence, depending on their level and field of expertise. Click here for more information.
Where can I take the test?
There are many authorised assessment centres covering the UK that carry out irtec testing. More centres are due to be added to the existing list shortly. Click here to find your nearest centre.
What training is available?
At the Service Maintenance and Repair Technician and the Vehicle Safety and Inspection Levels, assessment centres offer a pre-test training day. This pre-test day will not teach you what you will need to know, but rather give you an idea about what will be involved on the day, the type of equipment you will be tested on and give you an understanding about what will be required by you during the practical components of the test. This pre-test training day is not included in the cost of the registration and testing, and so carries an extra charge.
